aspic on the brain

I realize I’m jeopardizing future dinner invitations by saying this, but I’m oddly fascinated by aspic right now.

aspic!

OK, the above isn’t actually an aspic jelly – but it is a jello salad in a mold, which falls into the same category as far as I’m concerned. I spent a bunch of time last weekend reading my 1943 edition of the Joy of Cooking, which was full of such wonders. I don’t know if I’ll ever bring my aspic dream to fruition – but good lord, they’re weird, and I’m enjoying looking at pictures of them and imagining how anyone found them palatable.

Want!

Would it be over the top nerdy to wear this?

Two Things Of Note

1. I had lunch with my dear friend Oday yesterday! He had a long layover at Reagan, so he took the Metro into the city and we walked over to Georgetown for a bit. I haven’t seen him since his last visit to Champaign in the summer of 2005, so it was fantastic to catch up.

2. I just realized that I’ve finally stopped calling my little brother by his baby nickname. He’s 12.

My parents and Eric (formerly: Coo) will be in town for the holiday weekend. I’m not sure what we’re going to do other than dye Easter eggs, but it will be nice to have them around for a few days.

Music news!

I forgot to mention that my friend and former coworker Garret has released his first album! He’s recording under the name Tomorrow is Already Here, and his album is available on CDBaby and through the iTunes store. Go Garret!

Just thinking: lunchtime edition

It’s pretty rare that I miss anything about Rockford other than my family, but right now I could really go for a Mary’s Market sampler. I was there something approximating daily when I worked at Wonderland - grabbing lunch, making the coffee run for my coworkers, picking up bread or treats on my way home. It’s the first place I really learned to like coffee, and we all know how well that’s served me since.

By the Numbers

I’ve become a little bit rabid about recycling in my middling age. OK, I guess that’s a bit of a misstatement. Whenever possible, I’ve been rabid about recycling since my teens, when I worked with a crunchy hippie girl that I thought was the coolest. I think my paper recycling annoyed my parents at that point – and continues to baffle SB – or perhaps not baffle so much as he doesn’t always see the futility of it. After reading Cradle to Cradle last year, he became pretty skeptical of recycling – not so much that it’s a bad idea as that it isn’t always effective. Regardless, I’d rather recycle whatever I can while also reducing the amount of packaging purchased in the first place – than throw more things (even deliciously loud things) down the trash chute. That’s why this post so perfectly illustrates my frustration with recycling. I want to do the right thing – but what the heck am I going to do with all these #5 containers?

Pulaski Day

I just learned that in Philly, Casimir Pulaski Day is celebrated on Easter Monday. I grew up thinking that it was a weird holiday that was only celebrated in Illinois because of Chicago’s huge Polish population. I think I’m still right on the first part.

Out of Commission

I’m back in Virginia after five days in Illinois spent visiting friends and learning about metadata. I had a really nice time, despite the fact that I came down with the flu that’s been sweeping the country the day before I left. SB and I are both still sick, but we made the most of our sick day by watching an extreme amount of tv, whining a lot, and buying a humidifier as the awfully cute Hello Kitty one stopped spraying steam out of her ears this morning. It was good to visit, it’s good to be home, and I sincerely hope to feel better soon.
